Research Experiences
Katie's research experiences range from her work as a graduate student/graduate assistant, the associate researcher, and now to her current job as instructional designer and adjunct faculty. The hat of "researcher" can look very different depending on which project is being worked on and the role the researcher is being asked to play for a particular assignment.
Katie has collected video and interview data throughout Shelby County for the University of Pittsburgh. She has also assisted with focus groups in Memphis related to community gardens for a Strengthening Community's Grant. A large portion of the research Katie focused on while completing her master's degree focused on addressing the need for more research (particularly qualitative research) regarding mindfulness in early childhood education settings. Katie also assisted with research on the role and impact of play in education. Katie is most interested in qualitative research and, in her future work, plans to utilize qualitative methodologies, theories, methods, and analyses. Katie has been fortunate to participate in a variety of research projects during her employment at the University of Memphis. Katie has assisted with research projects throughout the nation related to evaluating professional development for teachers, investigating inquiry based science kits for students, evaluating community partnerships, literacy intervention efficacy, and instrument development.
